Preparing for a colonoscopy
If you have to have a colonoscopy examination, it can be beneficial to have a colon hydrotherapy treatment just before the colonoscopy, here's the procedure:
A colonoscopy (internal investigation of the intestines ) is a screening test for colorectal cancer, symptoms such as bleeding from the bowel, or disorders of the colon such as colitis and polyps (small, benign, grape-like growths). The procedure is carried out in a gastro-intestinal clinic or hospital with the patient under full anesthetic.
Many patients dread the preparation more than the colonoscopy, which involves cleaning out the colon to ensure it is fully visible during the screening, giving you the best chance of an accurate result.
The patient has to be on a 24-hour clear diet, consuming large amounts of laxative medication, sometimes up to 4 litres, and as a result spends a lot of time in the bathroom. It may also cause side effects including nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping and also dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
Your doctor must be able to see a clean colon in order to carry out the test effectively. If there are stools left inside, your doctor may not be able to see polyps or signs of cancer, and you may even have to repeat the test.
Some patients struggle to complete the course of laxative medication, leaving the colon unprepared for the screening. This is where it can be beneficial to have a colon hydrotherapy treatment as near as possible to the time for your scheduled colonoscopy, to ensure that your colon is clean.
PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that you follow the prescription from your doctor ahead of your colonoscopy – the colon hydrotherapy treatment is a complement to your preparation for cleaning your gut – not a substitute.
